16:21 Tuesday, June 15, 2021 (RTTNews.com) - The manager of a New York Shake Shack restaurant, Marcus Gilliam, is suing members of the New York Police Department, the New York City administration among others after he was unlawfully detained by police last year. He had been falsely accused in 2020 of poisoning the milkshakes of three police officers.

He has filed a suit against the New York Police seeking damages for alleged defamation and deprivation. The incident, which took place on June 15, 2020, according to him, caused severe emotional as well as psychological damage. Gilliam also said that the incident damaged his reputation forever.

In June last year, three New York police officers had claimed that they had fallen sick after drinking milkshakes from Shake Shack. Following that, New York Police Unions like the Detectives' Endowment Association and Police Benevolent Association had amplified the matter and sent out messages that the police department was facing a threat from Shake Shack workers.

As per the defamation suit, after the incident, around 20 policemen came to the store and detailed all the employees including Gilliam, who co-operated fully with the investigation. He was also later arrested and taken for questioning and interrogated and taunted for putting bleach in the milkshakes. Later investigations will reveal that the police officers did not have any serious symptoms. Through the lawsuit, Gilliam is filing for monetary damages to an unspecified amount and also for the damage caused to his reputation as after the incident, he was taunted by people for poisoning the officials.
