Welspun Corp Bags ₹5,500 Crore US Gas Pipeline Order; Global Order Book Hits Record $5.25 Billion
Pipes are the quiet backbone of the energy business. Every gas field needs a way to reach customers, and that means thousands of kilometres of coated steel pipe laid across long-distance lines. The buyers are usually large midstream companies, they sign multi-year contracts, and manufacturers with plants close to the project and a record of timely delivery tend to win the biggest orders.
The Nifty 50 was at 22,486.40, down 0.89%. Meanwhile, Sensex also fell 0.54% to 72,855.18 on Thursday. Meanwhile, Shares of Welspun Corp Ltd . were trading at Rs. 2,352.10, down 3.77 percent from previous close of Rs. 2,444.20. The stock opened at Rs. 2,408.00 and reached an intraday high of Rs. 2,469.00 and low of Rs. 2,338.00. The company currently has a market capitalization of Rs. 62,253 crores.

What's the News
Welspun Corp said its US subsidiary, Welspun Tubular LLC, has won an order of about Rs. 5,500 crore from a major midstream company. It will supply coated line pipes for a natural gas pipeline project in the Permian region. The pipeline will serve an anchor customer, a data centre complex of one of the top-tier hyperscalers. The order will be executed from Welspun's US facility during FY29.
With this order, the company's global order book stands at a record of about $5.25 billion, or roughly Rs. 50,000 crore. At its June-quarter results in July, the order book was about Rs. 25,750 crore, so it is now nearly double that. Welspun described the order as sitting at the intersection of energy transmission and AI-led data centre expansion. It did not name the midstream company or the hyperscaler.
Financial & Business Analysis
Looking at the quarterly results of Welspun Corp Ltd., the company's consolidated revenue from operations increased by 14.91 percent YoY, from Rs. 3,551.49 crore in Q2 FY26 to Rs. 4,081.12 crore in Q2 FY27, and decreased by 5.37 percent QoQ from Rs. 4,312.56 crore in Q1 FY27.
In Q2 FY27 Welspun Corp Ltd., consolidated net profit increased by 200.09 percent YoY, reaching Rs. 1,047.88 crore compared to Rs. 349.16 crore during the same period last year. As compared to Q1 FY27, the net profit increased by 181.84 percent, from Rs. 371.46 crore. The basic earnings per share stood at Rs. 39.68 as against Rs. 13.32 recorded in the same quarter in the previous year, FY2026.
Welspun Corp is mainly a pipe maker. Line pipes for oil, gas and water anchor the business, with ductile iron pipes, stainless steel bars and pipes, and building products such as TMT bars, water tanks and plastic pipes alongside them. Exports now drive the story, and management has called the US its pivot for growth, with capacity being expanded in the US and Saudi Arabia.
This order helps in three ways. It keeps the US plant busy through FY29, well beyond the usual one-to-two-year order cycle. It deepens the company's presence in the market that is already its growth engine. And it ties Welspun to a customer base, hyperscaler data centres, that is spending heavily. The record backlog gives long visibility, though execution timing and the US plant's capacity will decide how smoothly it converts into revenue.
Industry Context
The U.S. is now in the largest gas pipeline construction project since the shale boom. Twelve projects in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma are expected to add about 18 billion cubic feet a day (Bcf/d) of capacity in 2026, the most since 2008, according to Morningstar DBRS. Prices in the Permian region dropped significantly in the past year, as regional associated gas rose by approximately 20% to 12.5 Bcf/d and pipeline congestion in the region pushed prices down.
A new layer of demand for data centres. EQT projects that US demand for gas will increase by approximately 10 Bcf/d by 2030, primarily for power, and to as much as 18 Bcf/d in a more aggressive build-out. Kinder Morgan says data centres will consume 20% of the US's power by 2030, up from 2.5% in 2022. With data centre gas demand projected at around 6.1 Bcf/d by 2030, Eiger Express (2.5 Bcf/d) is slated for 2028 with a pipe order placed in FY29.
