Ranipet has a long industrial history in northern Tamil Nadu, with leather manufacturing forming one of its traditional strengths. Over the years, the district has developed a wider manufacturing base covering chemicals, tools, engineering and other industries. The SIPCOT Ranipet Industrial Park and SEZ, established in 1973, remains an important part of this industrial landscape, while the district's connectivity with Chennai and major transport networks supports the movement of goods and access to markets.
From a Traditional Leather Centre to a Wider Manufacturing Hub
Ranipet has traditionally been known for its leather and leather products industry, with large and medium-sized units producing finished leather, footwear and garments for domestic and export markets. The district has also developed industries across chemicals, engineering, automobile components and tools, giving it a broader manufacturing base beyond leather.
SIPCOT Ranipet Industrial Park: An Established Industrial Base
The Ranipet Industrial Park and SEZ was established in 1973, making it one of SIPCOT's long-established industrial locations. A SIPCOT document states that the Ranipet Industrial Complex covers about 1,420.71 acres and has nearly 220 manufacturing units, mainly across leather products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and engineering. Companies including Mitsubishi and Malladi Drugs are also identified among the major industries in the complex.
Panapakkam Adds Another Industrial Development
Ranipet’s industrial development is also extending beyond the established SIPCOT complex. SIPCOT has proposed a 300-acre Mega Leather Products Manufacturing Park at Panapakkam, aimed at strengthening the region’s leather and footwear manufacturing ecosystem. The proposed park is planned with infrastructure such as plug-and-play factory buildings, warehouses, logistics facilities, testing laboratories and skill-development facilities.

Location: Panapakkam, Ranipet district
Mega Leather Park: Around 300 acres
Central assistance: ₹125 crore
Focus: Leather, footwear and accessories manufacturing
Purpose: Strengthen the leather and footwear manufacturing value chain

Major Roads and Highways Connected to Ranipet
Ranipet is located along the Chennai–Bengaluru road corridor and is connected to the wider Chennai–Bengaluru industrial network  Its road and rail links connect it with Chennai, Bengaluru, Vellore and other industrial centres.

NH 48 / Chennai–Bengaluru Highway: Connects Ranipet with Chennai, Vellore and Bengaluru, supporting industrial and freight movement.
Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC): Places Ranipet within a wider industrial network connecting manufacturing and logistics centres across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Ranipet–Arcot Road: Connects Ranipet with Arcot and nearby areas, supporting local industrial and commercial movement.
Ranipet–Walajah Road: Connects Ranipet with Walajah and the Walajah Road Railway Junction, located around 8 km away and serving the Ranipet area.
Vellore–Ranipet Connection: Vellore is around 25 km from the Ranipet industrial area, providing access to another major commercial and industrial centre.
Chennai International Airport: Located around 105 km from Ranipet, providing air connectivity for business and industrial activities.
Chennai Port: Provides access to Chennai’s maritime logistics network for the movement of industrial and export-oriented goods.

The combination of NH 48, the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, Walajah Road railway connectivity and access to Chennai Airport and Port gives Ranipet a strong multi-modal transport network for manufacturing and logistics activity.
How Ranipet Connects With Bengaluru
Ranipet's location along the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor connects it with Bengaluru and other industrial centres in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. NH 48 provides road connectivity towards Bengaluru, while Ranipet's established manufacturing base in leather, chemicals, engineering and automobile components could support regional supply chains. The existing SIPCOT industrial base and proposed Panapakkam development could further strengthen Ranipet's role in the wider Chennai–Bengaluru industrial network.
