Stocks Likely to Benefit From October Price Hikes Across Auto, Consumer Durables, Jewellery, Paints and Cement
Consumers in India may have to spend more on several everyday products as companies across sectors raise prices from October. Automobiles, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, jewellery, paints and cement are among the categories facing price increases. Companies are taking this step mainly because of higher raw-material, fuel, freight and other operating costs.
For investors, these price hikes could create both opportunities and risks. Companies with strong brands and pricing power may be able to pass higher costs on to customers and protect their profit margins. However, higher prices could also affect demand if consumers delay purchases. The key question is which companies can raise prices while maintaining sales and margins. Here are the key sectors and stocks investors could watch.
1. Automobiles Industry
The automobile sector is among the first areas where manufacturers are passing higher costs on to customers. From October 1, several vehicle manufacturers are expected to implement price increases of around 1-3 percent, depending on the model and segment. The increases cover passenger vehicles as well as commercial vehicles.

The main reason behind the price revisions is higher commodity and manufacturing costs. Automobiles require large quantities of steel, aluminium, rubber, plastics and other components, meaning changes in raw-material prices can have a direct impact on production costs. Higher logistics and operating expenses can add further pressure.
Škoda Auto India, for example, has announced a price increase from October 1. Tata Motors' commercial-vehicle business is another important company to watch in this space. Ashok Leyland is also a major listed player in commercial vehicles.
The important point is whether customers continue buying vehicles even after the price increase. If demand remains strong, companies can improve their revenue per vehicle and protect margins. However, if higher prices reduce sales significantly, the benefit could be limited.
Companies to watch: Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, Ashok Leyland, Maruti, Hyundai and other listed automobile manufacturers.
2. ACs, Refrigerators, Washing Machines & TVs
Consumer durables are another major category facing price increases. Air-conditioner prices could rise by around 5-10 percent, while refrigerators, washing machines and televisions could become approximately 3-4 percent more expensive.
The pressure is coming from several directions. Copper, aluminium and steel are important inputs for appliances, while many components are imported or linked to global commodity prices. Higher freight costs and currency movements can also increase the landed cost of components. For air conditioners specifically, the cost structure is particularly sensitive to metals and other components.
Companies such as Blue Star and Voltas are therefore worth tracking in the listed space. Whirlpool India also has exposure to the consumer-appliance market, while LG India is a major industry participant in India.
The festive season could provide an important test for these companies. If consumers continue purchasing appliances despite higher prices, manufacturers may be able to protect their margins. Strong summer demand for cooling products can also provide pricing support.
However, investors need to monitor volumes carefully. A sharp price increase can encourage consumers to postpone purchases, particularly for discretionary products such as televisions and premium appliances.
Companies to watch: Blue Star, Voltas, LG India and Whirlpool India.
3. Gold Jewellery
The jewellery sector is experiencing a different kind of cost pressure. Hallmarking charges have increased, raising the per-article cost for jewellers. The hallmarking fee has increased from Rs. 45 to Rs. 75 per article, representing an increase of roughly 67 percent.
Although the absolute amount may appear small compared with the value of a gold jewellery purchase, the higher charge adds to operating costs across large volumes of jewellery articles. Jewellers may pass part of this additional expense to customers or absorb it depending on competition and demand.
The bigger issue for the companies, however, is the sharp movement in gold prices. Higher gold prices can increase the value of jewellery sales and therefore boost reported revenue, but they can also make jewellery less affordable for consumers. The strength of wedding and festive demand will therefore be crucial.
Organised jewellery retailers with strong brands and established trust could have an advantage because customers may continue to prefer branded jewellers even when prices are high.
Companies to watch: Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers India and Senco Gold.
4. Paints Industry
Paint companies are also preparing for higher prices. Asian Paints is expected to increase prices by around 3 percent from November 1, while the broader industry could see price increases during October and November.
The main reason is higher raw-material costs. Many important materials used in paints are linked to crude oil and petrochemical products. When crude-linked costs rise, paint companies face higher production expenses. A price increase can help companies recover these additional costs. Asian Paints and Berger Paints are two major listed names that investors can watch.
However, the benefit depends on how much of the price increase companies can pass on to customers. If raw-material prices remain high but companies are unable to raise prices because of competition, profit margins could come under pressure. On the other hand, softer crude prices could reduce input pressure and improve margins without requiring additional hikes.
Companies to watch: Asian Paints and Berger Paints.
5. Cement Industry
Cement companies are another important sector facing higher costs. Cement prices have already increased in some markets, and further increases are expected as companies try to deal with higher fuel and transportation expenses.
Cement prices reportedly increased by around Rs. 7 per bag in September, with additional increases of another Rs. 5-20 per bag expected in October. Higher coal, petcoke, diesel and freight costs are putting pressure on the industry's profitability. For cement companies, increasing prices is one way to protect margins. If construction activity remains strong and customers accept higher prices, companies can benefit from better realisations.
Companies to watch: UltraTech Cement, Ambuja Cements, ACC and Shree Cement.
Conclusion
The October price hikes show that companies across automobiles, consumer durables, jewellery, paints and cement are trying to manage higher input costs. By increasing prices, companies can recover part of the additional expenses and protect their profit margins. However, the impact will depend on whether customers are willing to accept higher prices.

For investors, companies with strong brands, pricing power, and steady demand could be better placed to benefit from these price increases. Stocks such as Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, Blue Star, Voltas, Titan, Kalyan Jewellers, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, UltraTech Cement and Ambuja Cements could remain on the watchlist. However, investors should also keep an eye on sales volumes, raw-material prices and competition.
Overall, a price hike does not automatically mean a stock will perform well. The key is whether companies can increase prices without hurting demand. If they manage to maintain sales while controlling costs, higher prices could support revenue and margins in the coming quarters.
