Relaxo Footwears vs Bata India: Which Footwear Stock Has the Stronger Growth Story?

Trade Brains | Sep 18, 2026 7:59 AM EDT

India’s footwear market is undergoing a structural shift as organised players gain share from the unorganised market. Relaxo’s industry presentation estimates the Indian footwear market could grow at a 9.7% CAGR between 2025 and 2034 , reaching ₹4,433 billion , while the organised footwear market is expected to grow at around 13% CAGR , rising from ₹674 billion in 2025 to ₹1,995 billion by 2034 . Sports and athleisure is identified as one of the fastest-growing categories, with an estimated growth rate of around 10% CAGR .
The same presentation also highlights rising e-commerce penetration, changing consumer preferences, growing women’s footwear demand and India's improving position in global footwear exports as key industry trends. Against this backdrop, Relaxo Footwears and Bata India are taking somewhat different approaches to capturing the opportunity.
Where the Two Businesses Meet
Relaxo and Bata both operate across multiple footwear categories and use extensive physical distribution networks combined with growing digital channels. Both companies are expanding their reach beyond traditional retail while focusing on product freshness, inventory productivity and stronger customer engagement.
Relaxo has a broad portfolio of brands and operates through around 630 pan-India distributors, more than 70,000 retailers and multi-brand outlets, 429 exclusive brand outlets , while exporting to approximately 37 countries .
Bata, meanwhile, is expanding its retail and distribution ecosystem through 2,000+ exclusive brand stores, 17,000+ multi-brand outlets and 1,678 towns . Its franchise network reached 750 stores , while its KRO network expanded to 3,472 outlets by June 2026.
Both are therefore pursuing growth through wider distribution, stronger retail execution and increased digital penetration, but their business models and immediate priorities differ.
Where the Business Models Diverge
Relaxo remains more manufacturing-led, with a large in-house production base and a portfolio spanning brands such as Relaxo, Flite, Bahamas and Sparx. The company operates nine manufacturing facilities , with production capacity being recalibrated to 9.1 lakh pairs per day as its RFL-I and RFL-II facilities undergo upgrading and modernisation. Management says the programme is aimed at improving infrastructure utilisation and strengthening its presence in the fashion-forward footwear segment.
Bata's strategy is more retail- and consumer-experience-led. Its Q1 FY27 initiatives revolve around retail expansion, digital and distribution scale-up, inventory decluttering, product-funnel redesign and focused marketing . Its Zero Base Merchandising programme had been rolled out to 775 doors , representing around 80% of retail business contribution , while franchise stores reached 750.
The contrast is visible in channel strategy as well. Relaxo combines a very large general-trade network with its own manufacturing capabilities and exports, whereas Bata is placing greater emphasis on retail productivity, merchandise optimisation, franchise expansion and omnichannel fulfilment.
Q1 FY27 Financials: A Side-by-Side Look
Relaxo reported revenue of ₹705 crore in Q1 FY27 compared with ₹654 crore a year earlier, implying growth of around 7.8% . EBITDA increased from ₹99 crore to ₹108 crore , while EBITDA margin improved from 15.2% to 15.4% . PAT rose from ₹49 crore to ₹55 crore , taking PAT margin from 7.5% to 7.8% .
The quarter also showed a change in Relaxo's revenue economics. Pairs sold declined from 4.3 crore to 4.2 crore , but average realisation increased from ₹151 to ₹166 per pair , indicating that higher realisation more than offset the modest volume decline.
Bata India generated ₹978.9 crore of revenue, up 3.9% year-on-year, with volume growth of 2.3% and a 130-basis-point improvement in gross margin. While reported PBT stood at ₹85.6 crore, this was impacted by ₹5.1 crore in one-off items (a ₹2.8 crore FX loss on license fees and a ₹2.3 crore ERP expense). Adjusting for these, underlying PBT grew 22% to ₹90.7 crore (from ₹74.5 crore), alongside a 7.6% increase in cash operating profit to ₹216.6 crore
This creates an interesting quarterly contrast. Relaxo delivered faster revenue growth of about 7.8% and a modest improvement in EBITDA margin, while Bata posted slower top-line growth but much stronger underlying PBT growth of 22% and a significant improvement in gross margin.
FY27 Growth Triggers: What Could Drive Growth Ahead?
Relaxo's growth strategy is centred on strengthening manufacturing efficiency, improving product mix and widening distribution. Its manufacturing modernisation is designed to support future growth and increase infrastructure utilisation, while the company's network already spans more than 70,000 retailers and approximately 37 export markets. The company also continues to focus on lean manufacturing, yield improvement and cost optimisation, with dedicated lines for fast-moving SKUs.
For Bata, the key growth levers are more focused on retail execution and improving productivity across its existing network. Franchise stores have expanded to 750 , KRO outlets to 3,472 , and town coverage to 1,678 . The company is targeting 4,000+ KROs by Q2 FY27 .
Digital is another important lever. Bata's e-commerce business grew 13% year-on-year , Bata.com increased 25% , and more than 1,050 stores were fulfilling online orders. Digital channels accounted for 14% of Bata India turnover , while the mobile app had crossed 300,000 downloads .
Inventory is also becoming a major efficiency driver. Bata reported a 37% reduction in inventory versus Q1 FY24 , with stock turns improving to 2.54 , while overall availability improved by around 12% . Full-price sales increased to 88% in Q1 FY27, compared with 73% in Q1 FY26.
Investor Overview
Relaxo Footwears and Bata India are both positioned to benefit from the expansion of India's organised footwear market, but their current growth drivers are different.
Relaxo's Q1 FY27 performance was driven by stronger revenue growth, higher average realisation and a small improvement in EBITDA margin despite lower pair volumes. Its large manufacturing footprint, broad general-trade network and international distribution provide multiple avenues for growth.
Bata's Q1 FY27 story was more focused on profitability and operating efficiency . Revenue growth was moderate, but gross margin expanded by 130 basis points, underlying PBT grew 22%, and the company continued to improve retail reach, inventory turns, digital penetration and franchise expansion.
In essence, Relaxo is showing stronger top-line momentum through scale, realisation and manufacturing-led execution, while Bata is leaning more heavily on retail productivity, distribution expansion, digital growth and margin improvement . The two companies are therefore exposed to the same long-term footwear opportunity, but the path to growth is distinctly different.
