In case anyone is not aware: autism is hereditary. That’s it. There’s no legitimate debate about the “causes” of autism. It’s just part of the wide spectrum of ways that humans can be and the associated traits can even be beneficial for some autistic people under certain circumstances. Autism is over-represented in the STEM fields, for instance. See also, Dr Grandin’s work on visual thinking and her revolutionizing of animal slaughter practices.
See also, Tylenol is basically the *only* medication that pregnant women aren’t currently advised against taking. So OBVIOUSLY most pregnant women have taken it during the 9 months of their pregnancy. No causative link should be inferred.
And, the old (and only) study linking vaccines to autism was retracted, the data was falsified and the author had conflicts of interest.

Same , I sense his superiority complex too , like everyone around the world in STEM probably wants something quant , nothing wrong trying to prepare for that since it encourages overall skills development

I understand that I dont come from a STEM background, so my chances at pure QR are just 0.
Which is why I am looking for Quantamental. My concern is just that whether I do have any chances breaking into Quantamental or even it is like QR i.e. closed for me.
And if I can get into Quantamental what is the way forward- MFE or Maths and Coding Projects or networking or a combination of both.
Lastly, I am not looking for these roles for high salaries. I want to get into these roles because I like research, I like problen solving and I like coding, and I feel that Quants and/ or Quantamental lets me do just that. I aspire to learn on the job, see how experienced professionals in the field think and work and based on the experience, knowledge, skills and networks gained from such roles, start a fund of my own.
This is what motivates to join these profiles in the first place

The bigger issue is the educational system. China is producing more STEM graduates than anywhere else in the world. That's what is going to destroy America.

I was looking for Quantamental roles which combine Fundamental knowledge and Quantitative knowledge.
My only worry is that I dont have a formal STEM education.
I can demonstrate my coding and math skills through projects
But do recruiters value such projects?

About me: I come from a non-STEM background, basically a CA and CFA. I am good at coding in Python and C#. I have rough knowledge of mathematical concepts and moreover a keen interest to improve my Math skills.
I am currently working in Risk and have worked earlier in Fixed Income.
Issue: I understand that my coding and/ or math skills are no match for those of STEM candidates, but I wanted to do something about it and came across MFE as a potential solution/ "bridge" for me.
Question:
Being an absolute non-STEM but with coding skills and with market experience of FI Research + Risk, can I break into Quant or atleast Quantamental roles?
For my given profile, if I complete a MFE program, would I then be able to make it into Quants/ Quantamental?

Hi everyone,
I am planning to apply to Columbia's **MSFE (Master of Science in Financial Engineering)** program, and I’ve been reading their latest placement statistics. It looks *extremely* impressive, but as an international student, I’m worried about visa issues and wanted to hear from people who’ve been through this process or knows about this field.
Here’s a quick summary of the report for the **Class of 2023**:
* **95** students started the program (Fall 2022)
* **90** received full-time offers by graduation → **100% placement within 3 months**
* Most graduates went into **Investment Banking (69%)** or **Asset Management (28%)**
* Companies hiring include top firms like **JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Bridgewater, Point72, Millennium, BlackRock**, etc.
**My questions:**
1. For international students coming out of a **top-tier FE program like Columbia**, how realistic is it to get sponsored for an H-1B(while working in wall street) and stay in the U.S. long-term?
2. If I don’t have a secured visa, can I still land a decent IB role right after graduation, even at mid-tier firms? (with 1 year of OPT + 2 year STEM extension)
3. Have you or anyone you know **had to leave after 3 years on OPT + STEM** because they couldn’t get an H-1B?
4. With political changes ahead, should I be worried about banks cutting back on sponsorships or tightening international hiring?
Sorry for the long post, but I’ve always had this American dream of building my career in Wall Street. With so many uncertainties around visas and sponsorship, I just wanted to hear from people who’ve been through this before. Any advice or personal stories would mean a lot — thank you!

I’m fairly certain the most successful fund in history only hired people STEM Doctorates, working in physics and similar fields. This was for their ability to manipulate and understand data.
They were able to model an algorithm giving an approximation of what variables will impact the market and how.
They systematically beat the market with science. I don’t consider average day traders to be able to beat the market because no mater how sure of your edge you are, it could take a bear/bull market flip to ruin it.
You’re at the mercy of the market, not beating it.
Or at least that’s just my opinion, I’m Happy to hear someone else’s!
