Backing up the other comments on volatility decay over the long-term with my personal experience from just the past 2 months. I've got more than $500K in GDX & GDXU (3x GDX). From 16th October till now, GDX & GDXU dropped from their tops of $84 & $280 to bottom out at $70 (-17%) & $130 (-55%) end of October & then rose back to $81 (+15%) & $210 (+60%) now. As you can see, unleveraged GDX is near its old ATH while GDXU is well off its old peak. My strategy has been to swap from GDXU to GDX when gold falls & vice versa when gold rises, so this has been wildly profitable & aligns with my long-term bullish view on gold.
I think most LETFs are probably best for short-term use over a few days or weeks. I had a small $40K risk-on mini-portfolio of SOXL/TQQQ/UPRO/BITU from 10th October to 4th November (moderately successful), swapped to their risk-off short versions SOXS/SQQQ/SPXS/SBIT till 21st November (very successful), then reversed back to risk-on till now (moderately successful), plan to cash out on 10th December morning (Fed meeting). While this has overall been a profitable exercise, it has personally been very stressful as I am quite uncertain over the long-term direction of the markets & more used to 2x LETFs like QLD & SSO for buying & holding. Maybe OP should ask the guys on r/LETFs for advice on their long-term strategies.
