Yes I too like funds that at least dip their toes into a few international stocks. I'll never be a VXUS guy, but I do realize we need to have some other funds in the portfolio besides US. I just choose to do it via global funds rather than EX-US. US stocks will benefit from me buying US ETFs, so why harm my own portfolio (even if it's a tiny tiny amount) by buying funds that do nothing for my home markets.
I wish I had some more answer for you, but I am not in front of my watchlist right now. Off the top of my head though, you can use global funds like: IOO, IXN, QTUM, JXI, IXC, RXI, IGF and of course VT.
Also SHLD is not exclusively foreign stocks, it is global.
