Before the market meltdown in April I sold every individual stock I owned. But when I did own individual stocks my choice for defensive stock would be PG. I owned a bunch of it. My wife's account still has a small portion of KO in it (1% of the total).

WMT, PG, and COST have been historical winners. But if it's helpful, this full list of defensive dividend stocks has a lot of solid options.

KO, I wish PG, but I'm down like 8% after holding for a year. MO because people aren't going to stop smoking/vaping or drinking beer. My odd pick would be HAS. They own Monopoly. I work with some people that don't really drink or smoke but, they have $1.99 to spend on extra dice. As well as owning Magic the Gathering. There is a reason they call it carboard crack.

Here are my considerations for Dividend Growth stocks (not Dividend Income):
Starting yield at least at least 2x the current yield on SPY
Dividend growth of at least 6% (twice as fast as inflation)
Earnings growth greater than or equal to dividend growth
Payout Ratio less than 60% (80% for Utilities)
10+ years consecutive dividend growth
Credit rating of BBB+ or better
LT Debt/Capital less than 50%
Appropriate Chowder Rule score
Analyst scorecard (how reliable are the projections?)
No one stock greater than 5% of portfolio and no sector more than 20%

Here are our current holdings across our two main accounts…
**Retirement account:**

Growth: QQQM SCHG
Dividend Growth: SCHD DGRO FDVV
Income: FSCO JEPI JEPQ RNP RQI UTG
International Income: IDVO LVHI
**Taxable account: **
Because we are recently retired early, the portfolio is in the process of migrating from Dividend Growth to Dividend Income.
Growth: GOOGL AMZN AAPL NVDA V

Lately I’ve been thinking about defensive plays…the kind that hold up when the market wobbles. The usual suspects come to mind like JNJ, PG, KO, and utilities that pay steady dividends.
What companies do you lean on when you want stability over growth? Curious to hear the sub’s picks…
