I was thinking about this last night. I was going to post but searched and found this post. The pieces that get me most excited about Hasbro are:
Potential for Powerpack style digital MTG pack openings with a marketplace for buying selling and trading where you actually own your cards.
Same thing for D&D.

Another MTG ape here - definitely think Ryan, given recent moves with PSA is definitely in touch with the value of collectibles and his track record shows he’d treat us well. For the sake of the game I love I’d be thrilled to see this - for the sake of the stock I love I’d rather see them acquire eBay.
If they acquired BOTH - well, that’s the card IP, the distribution network for singles and the store frontage to sell them. But now we’re talking what, nearly 100 billion in acquisitions ?
It make sense, that’s for sure.

MTG would be sick for power packs. This just to make sure, was an honest question, I have no idea about Hasbro or MTG, I just like the card art : D
D&D is having it's own issues though- most people I'm with are not fans of the new content, and books, so idk, if Ryan does this, I hope he overhauls management and gets it back to it's roots and themes but that's not really a conversation meant for the sub I feel. Either way- I wouldn't be upset, especially if he gets a good deal!

Well, from that perspective GME is doing card grading, MTG is cards so it makes sense to get them coming and going. From a personal perspective as a TTRPG player, I definitely think the D&D side of WOTC needs to be reformed.
However, that goes even further as it would broaden access via shelf space of D&D products and potential in-store games (either, whatever is easier) to further drive business and community engagement.
So I could see that being a huge fit cross hobby, cross collectible and drives customers in-store instead of online.

I'm here to speculate!

Im throwing Hasbro(dungeons and dragons, MTG, and monopoly) into the ring as a M&A target, with backup guesses being Mattel(Barbie, Hot Wheels), Newell Brands(Sharpie, Rubbermaid)

PSA can be, and Hasbro provides control over MTG which pairs extremely well with the Arcade.

MTG and D&D have the one of the most loyal communities. It’s highly profitable. Would boost Ebitda and revenue. And Hasbro has enough parts where Ryan can eliminate bureaucracy to transform it further (btw Transformers is part of Hasbro as well, what a coincidence :D )

Lets pretend it is Hasbro.... why would we want it?
The only reason I could think, would be to fix the MTG market and manage it as an IP properly. Past that, I mean, they could sell board games but I just don't see it.

Hasbro, D&D, Magic.
Especially on MTG Arena, I mostly just sign on to grind the daily quest and then sign off.
But everything reminds me of D&D...

It definitely is an exciting time because based on Gamestops focus they currently have:
Gaming of Course
Personal Computer
Trading Cards Games
And as people have been mentioning their are 3 potential focuses when it comes to these 3 current focus:
Ubisoft(I'm only stating not saying it would be a good idea because this one is a high risk, high reward venture)
Corsair(If they wanted to lean on computer gaming this would be a great one to inject into their stores as they could bring a greater focus computer gamers and I would argue is a medium risk, high rewards)
Magic the Gathering(Rather than Hasbro because I feel given Hasbro's current situation and fumbling of the IP, this could be a means for Gamestop to gain control of it and have a flagship trading card under their belt. While I would argue this is also high risk, high reward, if they actually managed to gain this property and fix the underlining issue with the product, they could make bank from it.)
Past that though, unless they grab something from left field it's definitely hard to say what Gamestop will focus on. It will be curious though because let's say they do get their hand on MTG, then in theory because they have ownership of that property they would also have a foot in every TCG shop that provides that product and could develop their own partnership with these stores without needing actual Gamestop stores to handle things. Imagine a factory front handling the distribution and these stores being MTG/Gamestop certified to sell product as well as have special perks for being Gamestop certifed.
Now only would the burden of a physical retail be reduced from Gamestop's side but their ability for communities to grow through different stores would increase as they would have the handling of these owners who are in it for the love of the games to help create communities that could help them expand further in their collectible card ventures.

Nintendo wouldn't sell Pokemon card rights even if Hell froze over, so yea owning the MTG company is as close a second as you can get.

As a casual MTG player who has been playing for 20 years, the shareholder suit is both a good thing and a bad thing in my opinion. Has Hasbro been a good steward of the MTG universe, competitive, and casual play? Largely no. From the lawsuit and personal experience, it definitely feels like they are milking the IP to shore up unprofitable business segments and compromising a lot on what has made MTG historically great. I absolutely loathe the Universes Beyond and Secret Lair nonsense. MTG has enough in universe lore and creativity, the only reason to dip outside of that into unrelated pop culture is for $$$.
Is excessive reprinting a good thing or a bad thing? Depends on who you are. MTG has been getting steadily more expensive to break into as a hobby. More access to powerful, loved cards means more people are playing. Reprints like this hurt collectors and the secondary market. For a long time, MTG could be considered a decent investment vehicle. Card value generally increases over time unless it's added to the ban list or reprinted. I can see why this would be an unpopular move for those individuals.
Card print quality has been going down. Opening new booster packs, the cards have a pretty strong chemical smell from the ink and printing process. Foil cards are being referred to as "Pringles" because they curl so much. Older foils would have a slight bend especially in higher humidity, but nowadays it's ridiculous.
One thing I do like is all the alternate art and card style options. It's like giving your deck skins to fancy it up a bit, but that's obviously personal preference.
How does this tie to GME? Well I think Hasbro isn't doing well, and their acquisition of Wizards is largely keeping them afloat. So Cohen buying them up is really him buying Wizards of the Coast, which would give him that MTG intellectual property. Given his customer satisfaction focused MO, I think GME would be good stewards of MTG, definitely better than Hasbro. I'm just not convinced a Hasbro acquisition would be good for GME.

I agree big difference between magic cards and Pokemon.. every one wants graded Pokemon cards but MTG cards don't get graded as often because the game is actually played. But that is changing too

Been suggesting this acquisition for years - especially a couple years ago when Hasbro was down to a 4-5bil valuation.
Being able to cut out so many of the middle men for MTG distribution would be amazing. It’s also a physical product that would drive traffic to stores. Cut out the scammers that are using Amazon to buy / return resealed product.
Also get rights to a bunch of classic board games. Keep existing distribution through Meijer, target , Walmart, etc for cheap versions of the games and sell premium high quality versions at GameStop for Monopoly, risk, clue, trouble, battleship, etc.
Partner with local card shops to enable MTG events / tournaments and give the shops survivable margins on sealed product.

Interesting that Hasbro was also just hit with a lawsuit for allegedly overprinting MTG cards and reducing the value of existing cards. If someone had a sense that they were a target for GameStop and wanted to slow things down, a lawsuit might add some friction to any eventual purchase...
