you can always cherrypick to dismantle any argument. Although it is really not an indicator of future performance, companies that grow their dividend today, tend to keep growing them tomorrow, and that growth is usually a consequence of their own business growing. One must follow how the business is doing, and in a lot of cases, the painting is on the wall. WBA or 3M were two cases anyone could see coming. I didn't have LEG in my radar so I can't talk about that one.

Don't put too much faith on that metric; in the last 3 years three dividend kings fell of the list and they continued to grow dividends until the bitter end, long after they could not afford it; 3M, LEG, and Walgreens. Those were companies with a 50+ year streak of raising dividends.
Cash is king, in this case cash flows; sustained diminished cash flows, you want to bail long before the dividend cut.
