Is there an actual data backing up the claims, that their financial problems are caused by removal of DEI policies?

I mean, yes, it is also about the DEI. That move pissed off a hell of a lot of people. There can be multiple reasons.

What's confusing. Target got rid of DEI cause we need to please our fearless, white (mostly 🍊) leader. So it's back to Jim Crow, the American way!

Their fall happened under Biden if you paid attention to anything - like when they promoted LGBTQ kid clothing and had empty shelves. Trump bad is easy to apply to anything bad so you don’t have to do critical thinking though.
Glad they got rid of the DEI program, maybe if they hired competent people they wouldn’t be in this mess.

I haven’t shopped at Target since they folded to Magas DEI demands. I’m glad to help

Is there any actual evidence this is in response to their DEI policies vs market conditions?

> The DEI thing doesn't have much to do with it imho
Lmao yes it clearly did
They already rolled it back and brought in Al Sharpton to do so

So, to summarize the past few years for this company:
Target goes full on DEI and pro-trans, faces massive backlash and can't make numbers.
Target retracts DEI nonsense and removes "in your face" pro-trans products and messaging, faces massive backlash and can't make numbers.
Now they play the umbrella insurance card of "tariffs mean we don't know what our numbers are going to be". They will continue to be bad.
At what point does wall street just admit management of this company is failing, and until they are all replaced and the company finds an identity, it will continue to be a loser?

Target has struggled since COVID with supply chain on one end, and being relevant to consumers on the other end.
Blaming the rollback of DEI as the only headwind worth noting?  This is as weak as blaming theft.  Walmart has been driving cost efficiency and online transition.  Amazon has been doing the same.  COSTCO continues to drive value for the consumer.  Target just.... exists.  Their grocery prices are high and the selection is limited in most stores.  Consumers value physical brick and mortar for non-food items less every day.
Less customers in each store, and those customers are spending less despite inflation meaning that even spending the same is actually buying less.  Target is faced with the reality that they aren't #1 in any category (price, quality, convenience, value) while their competitors are relentless in improving.  See the old battle of K-Mart VS Walmart.

I’d not been in months, but had a bind recently where I needed a clothing item right away for my kid before other stores were open around me. What was surreal is the teen tshirt area. Mixed in with band and feel good slogan shirts were a bunch of beer shirts - Coors, Miller. Also a lot of Ford Bronco shirts and some camo Bass Pro NASCAR shirts. All in the girl teen section. Nothing remotely “woke” anywhere in sight. This is in a democrat heavy suburban area. Seems like they not only got rid of anything DEI but have doubled down on what they think the trend is. Surprised there wasn’t MAGA merch in there too.
Btw, I grew up in a rural area. Camo NASCAR stuff is fine but not sure how many teen girls want it. The beer shirts pissed me off in a teen section, not going to lie. Just reinforced I don’t want to shop there.

Yea my sisters are the same way. Target was my Go To for anything other than groceries too.
I don’t care about the token DEI policies these mega corps have beyond just token support but when they start making a big deal of anti DEI that’s when I start to take notice.

The only reason Target is down is because of boycotts. The second they back track and reinstate their DEI policies their traffic and sales will skyrocket.

It's not like Target was a well considered a well running machine before their DEI change. It's been floundering for years.

Sometimes I see a comment like this and realize people can't take a joke. But Target's demo tends to be higher income and liberal. The people complaining about DEI policies and pride displays don't shop there, they're just grandstanding. It's similar to how Tesla has alienated a good chunk of their customer base with Elon's antics.
