Because dividend stocks do not outperform growth stocks.
I own around 50 dividend stocks, I have owned my S&P 500 Index Fund since 1991, my spouse since 1985. I started my First dividend reinvestment plan in 1991 also, that was in AWK. AWK was bought out by a German company and went private, so I rolled that money into WTRG. I still own WTRG.
The S&P 500 fund has outperformed the dividend portfolio, not by a little, but buy a lot.
Granted, maybe I bought the worst 50 dividend stocks in the world when I started in the 1990s, at the time three of them were tops in their category, and one of them was the #1 company in the world. Thank god I did not buy or ever own ENRON.
I am glad I own the dividend stocks now, as we are retired and we are earning more in dividends/interest than from Social Security, but if we would have put all that money into the S&P 500, it would probably be worth $10,000,000 today instead of what I have in utilities, drugs, oil&gas, consumer, entertainment, industrials, etc. I could probably figure it out, but I won't waste my time. S&P 500 grew at 11% per year, dividend stocks might have grown 5% per year.
4% of $10,000,000 is $400,000 which ain't bad or $33000 a month.
I won't cry, we were diversified. We owned S&P 500 mutual funds and dividend stocks. I could not foresee the future.

Interesting to see utilities go down during this green period. Hesitantly adding more Waste Management and I'm starting to eye AWK - fell from 150 to 135, maybe we're gonna see 120s again.

Yeah, the big brain plays can be so hit and miss. They just teach us humility and why diversifying is important lol.
What I’ve learned is healthcare is not my sector. Every time I’ve tried anything health care related, it takes too long to go green or get a nice profit. A few times have been quick profits like the BDX and ZBH recoveries after their earnings. Others are like UNH.
I have better luck with financials, tech, utilities, and consumer staples right now. Yesterday’s surge I saw most of my defensive holdings drop a lot so people could make quick tech plays it looked like. So I picked up more RSG, WM, AWK, SO, and DUK. If they go down lower after all the reports we get this week, I’ll buy some more. But I’m expecting a switch back to defensive stocks going up if any of these reports cause investors to become bearish. I personally think today was a bull trap and we will hit a bear market if store shelves start emptying out nation wide.
