I’m sure ChatGPT could summarize it better but my smooth brained understanding - a lot would happen before they are delisted.
You have to be under $1 for I believe 30 consecutive trading days before that happens so many companies will do a reverse split to avoid this. A trick that can be repeated over and over. Go look at NKLA stock before it went bankrupt. They issued a reverse split this time last year 30:1. So for every 30 shares you now only have one.
Some companies that are in debt and cashflow negative rely on issuing stocks to either debtors or retail to continue to raise capital and keep the doors open. Once you are delisted, your company can still operate and have their shares traded off market (over the counter like spirit airlines), but for most who rely on public support it means bankruptcy or being acquired.

It's not impossible, but it wouldn't be GME or AMC. I was charged 3k per day to borrow around 100k worth of NKLA back in the day. The borrow rate was over 1000% annualized.
