When i invest, i look at dividends and stability. Because i tend to not check on it weeks on ends sometimes, i prefer to know I'm not being screwed while on vacation. Allow me to throw out something else.
1. How much can you invest? Most financial advisors ask the same, but they say how much are you willing to risk? I prefer :invest" bc if you make smart choices then it's not gambling. Buy blue chip stocks if you have the money... a quick google will get you Apple, Microsoft, blah blah (I'd stick with the beaten path). Buy enough that your monthly dividends equals a sizable paycheck. Since most of us aren't here, then we go to number 2.
2. How much can you risk? This is when it gets risky. You are still looking for dividend yielding tickers, but these stocks do not a strong history, but can turn a profit in a striving economy. Personally, this is where I'm at now. I do hold some of number 1 stocks, but not enough for a big check monthly. I'll be honest, I'm looking for another Amazon stock. Here are my recommendations: IVR, MFGP, F, SIRI, GE, HPE(not hpq), CTL, MFA, KOS, CNTY, MTSC, MITT, and LOAN. Buy from different sectors as to not have all your eggs in one place. There are others I am buying, but these are the ones that I recently purchased and have at least an 80% positive outlook.
3. Penny trading is to get gains asap. This isn't hold to triple or quadruple your profit. It is IN and OUT. This becomes, HOW MUCH CAN YOU LOSE AND NOT CRY? this is gambling, but if you do it smart enough, you can beat the system. You can make the best choices and do everything right, and still lose everything. See my earlier comment with the 4 condensed rules to penny trading.
Good luck.
