you need to use VT in retirement account and VTI/VXUS in brokerage account to get FTC (foreign tax credit if allowed based on your home country)

The FCC didn't deregulate shit, that's the Republicans. They break government and then turn around and tell you government doesn't do shit and you buy it. That's why people were against the FTC suing Microsoft from buying Activision...up until they did the things monopolies inevitably do.

You wont get FTC if you use VT though.
But VTI+VXUS OR VT
Just 1-2 ETFs enough.

I’m a US citizen in the UK - some options to look at:
1. Does your country offer a “pension” product that is protected under the relevant tax treaty? Many of the tax treaties protect pensions, so that you can benefit from the tax relief and also can buy PFICs without issue.
2. If you have unexcluded earned income (i.e. using the FTC rather than FEIE), you can contribute to an IRA. Check how your country of residence treats IRAs (not many recognise Roth) - can also be an option for tax advantages and buying PFICs (or possibly US funds). Interactive Brokers and Schwab International will open IRAs for Americans abroad.
3. Investing in a basket of individual non-PFIC stocks. To be Boglehead, you aren’t trying to pick winners, you’re trying to roughly emulate the index with a diverse holding of individual stocks. Some ideas here: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Passively_managing_individual_stocks

I’m about to start my brokerage in a taxable account and do VT 100% in my Roth IRA, and I’ve been toying with whether or not to go VT in taxable or go VXUS/VTI for the foreign tax credit. I really don’t want to fool with investments and the less I do, the better. I can’t find definitive answers on whether the FTC is worth it instead of opting for the absolute simplicity of VT 100%. Do you have any insight into the value of FTC or not?

I get what youre saying but then we wouldn't even be able to call 99.999999% silver "pure". Its just saying that 95% of the metal content is pure silver. Older refining methods were typically between 94% and 96% silver when complete and in metallurgy pure means that its not intentionally allowed with other metals in order to add strength or color tone. So by definition in metallurgy it fits as "pure" but is kind of in a greyish zone because of modern refining methods for bullion being at 99.99%+ the FTC regulation for platinum to be called pure is 950 parts per thousand to be fair trade. Silver is or was probably the same in the place of origin.
