It should be noted that mBridge is not intended to be used by all parties like SWIFT. It is designed for inter-settlement between banks (e.g. trusted parties) so it doesn't have a need for AML or fraud controls. mBridge transactions will be on a blockchain with a (theoretical anyways) immutable public ledger so there will not be any disputes of who has what or when.
mBridge will likely never merge with SWIFT. The whole point of creating it in the first place was to avoid the risk of SWIFT weaponization by Western countries. Could there be interoperability built in some day? Well, maybe, but I could only see that happening in a reverse scenario where mBridge becomes the dominate inter-bank settlement medium globally and SWIFT starts losing so much market share it tries to save itself from irrelevance by becoming interoperable with SWIFT for inter-bank settlement.

A large part of the reason why SWIFT transfers take a long time is due to anti fraud and AML regulatory requirements.
It’s not just unnecessary overhead either; as a financial system becomes larger the consequences of fraud and money laundering can create serious issues and threaten national economies.
A BRICS (or other) competitor to SWIFT can declare fast transfer speeds because right now it doesn’t take into account AML and fraud regulations. For it to interface with SWIFT or work in any country with these regulations, the system will need to adopt similar regulations.
And even if the systems remain independent forever (unlikely) the nations using a SWIFT competitor will eventually demand AML/AF/etc rules as if they don’t, criminal behaviour will thrive on their system and end up causing all sorts of damage.
