If FCMP++ come out, and 'when' is a very stretchy term, it could be in 2 or 3 years, Monero will maybe be at 80-90% of what zk-proofs routinely achieve.
And even if privacy is somehow "fixed", **there still remains serious problems with Monero**:
- Fiat ramps are super hard to use. Monero is extremely hard to buy. Retail FOMO is impossible with Monero. Meanwhile: you can buy LTC or Zcash in a few clicks, on virtually any major exchange, withdraw them to your wallet, move to a shielded address, and you're done.
- Monero loses some of its privacy if you don't run a full node. For 90% users it's impossible to run a full node. Who has 300GB of free SSD space lying around?
- "Hand cash" use of Monero is tedious because of 10 block spend limit. LTC, BCH, ZEC do not have these problems. When you spend some Monero, you have to wait 20-30 minutes to be able to spend again. This is ingrained deep in the protocol and cannot be easily fixed.
- It's hard to find developers due to notorious reputation and exotic privacy codebase. Other contenders to private digital cash are Bitcoin code forks, and Bitcoin is very easy clay to work with.
I'm not saying kinda-maybe-legit projects like Zano or Pirate Chain are the answer. It's just that Monero isn't "the solution" to private p2p cash. At least not yet.
