Livepeer is an open video infrastructure, enabling developers to build video streaming applications. The network has been live on Ethereum's mainnet since May 2018, is run by a decentralized network of token holding node operators, and powers both traditional and web3 video streaming at reduced prices relative to the existing cloud providers. The major technical components of Livepeer include the Livepeer Protocol, the Go-Livepeer node, and the Livepeer Media Server (LPMS). The protocol is implemented as a set of Ethereum smart contracts written in solidity that serve the function of creating an open marketplace for node operators to register their services, a payments settlement layer through a probabilistic micropayments mechanism, a delegated stake based protocol for securing and QA'ing work on the network, and a governance mechanism for voting on and executing protocol upgrades. Livepeer Media Server The LPMS is an open source media server that handles all things video - origin services, ingest protocols, transcoding logic, streaming and playback logic, and more. Live video and audio input streams need to be transcoded in order to be consumable on different types of devices, each with their own format and bandwidth requirements. Centralized services are available, but typically expensive. The Livepeer Media Server is an open-source version that can be used as a standalone component, but also is a core component of the Livepeer Network. Go-Livepeer The go-livepeer implementation of the Livepeer node implements the protocol, speaks to the blockchain, and embeds LPMS to handle video broadcast, transcode, and streaming/playback functionality. There exist nearly 100 additional repositories and projects that complement this core technology including frontend applications for staking and governance, devops scripts for operating nodes on the network, a hosted version of the broadcasting functionality running at livepeer.com, and more.
